HUM - Your Music, Your Voice · Effective October 26, 2026

Your voice while you record

When you record, HUM sends the sound from your microphone to HUM's servers, which turn it into notes and send the notes back. The recording is held in memory only while it is being turned into notes, and is not stored afterwards, unless you have turned on "Help Improve HUM" (below).

"Help Improve HUM" (off unless you turn it on)

"Help Improve HUM" is one switch in the app's menu, also offered in the question HUM asks after your third take. Turning it on does two things: it keeps your takes (this section) and it counts how you use the app (Usage statistics, below). Turning it off stops both.

While it is on, we keep the recording of each take you make: the few seconds of room sound before you hum, your hum, and the notes HUM found. We also keep a few technical facts about how it was recorded, such as the sample rate and the microphone settings.

  • We use these recordings only to make HUM hear notes better, including in future versions of HUM.
  • They are stored privately, are not linked to your name, account or device, and are never sold.
  • You can turn "Help Improve HUM" off at any time in the app's menu. Takes recorded after that are not kept.
  • To have kept recordings deleted, email us (see Contact) with the approximate dates and times of the takes. Because they are not linked to you, those details are how we find them.

Your saved hums

The hums you save in "My HUMs" are stored only on your device, and we cannot see them, unless you share one (below). Deleting a hum, or the app, removes it from your device. "Export HUMS" creates a file that you choose where to keep.

Sharing a song with friends

When you choose "Share with Friends", HUM uploads a copy of that song and gives you a link to send. The copy holds the song's notes (as HUM first heard them and as you edited them), its instruments, track names, volumes, mood and speed, and, if you chose one, the name you asked HUM to show your friends (you can leave it blank). It never holds your voice or any recording.

  • Anyone who has the link can open a copy of the song in HUM, and see on the link's page how many tracks it has, which instruments play them, and the name you chose, if you chose one.
  • We do not know who shared a song or who opens it: the copy is not linked to your device or to any account. A name you chose travels inside the copy and shows on its page; you can change or clear it in HUM's menu. We count how many songs are shared and opened, without the songs or their links.
  • A shared song stays available so its link keeps working. To have one removed, email us (see Contact) with its link, or use "Report this link" on the link's page.

Feedback you send

If you use "Report Issues / Send Feedback", we receive what you write, the tags you pick, and a few facts that help us reproduce the problem: your device and browser type, your screen size, the time on your device, and the state of the app (for example the instrument in use and how many notes are open). Reports are anonymous and are kept as long as they help us fix HUM.

Usage statistics (part of "Help Improve HUM")

While "Help Improve HUM" is on (above), the app counts how you use it: which screens and buttons you use, how each take goes (whether notes were found and how long they took), and whether a song was saved, sent or opened. With these counts the app sends a random number it made and keeps on your phone, replaced every three months and whenever you turn the switch off, so we can tell a returning phone from a new one without knowing whose it is.

  • Never included: your voice, your notes, any name, any song or link, your address.
  • How it is read: by HUM's maker, as totals and as one phone's visits in order.
  • It is never combined with kept recordings, shared songs or feedback, which are stored apart from it.
  • How long: the records themselves for 13 months, totals indefinitely.
  • How to stop: turn "Help Improve HUM" off in the menu. Turning it off also replaces the number, so the records made before can no longer be tied to your phone, or to anything after, by design.

Diagnostics

When something goes wrong on HUM's servers, they log what failed and where, with technical details such as the app version; those logs exclude your recordings, your notes, your IP address and any account or device identifier. For each take, HUM's servers also log technical facts such as its length, how many notes were found and how long it took, but no audio and no address. The app and its page send no error reports to anyone.

Service providers

We use a small number of providers to run HUM. They process data only on our behalf. Apple distributes HUM through the App Store and TestFlight. Cloudflare delivers the app's pages, protects and connects HUM's servers, and stores opted-in recordings, feedback, shared songs and usage statistics. Fly.io runs HUM's servers. To deliver the service, these providers process the network address your device connects from. HUM itself does not store it.

What we don't do

  • No accounts, and no email address or phone number asked for.
  • No advertising, and no tracking of you across other apps or websites.
  • No selling or renting of any data.

Security

Everything HUM sends travels encrypted (HTTPS and secure WebSockets). Kept recordings and feedback are stored in private storage that only HUM's servers and its developer can access. Shared songs are stored apart from them, and open only through their links.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct or delete data about you, or to object to its use. Email us and we will respond within 30 days. Since HUM collects nothing linked to your identity, we may ask for details, such as the dates of your takes, that let us find what you are asking about.

Children

HUM is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us recordings with "Help Improve HUM" on, email us and we will delete them.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change affects how recordings are used, we will also say so in the app.
